Fiestas de Sants (in Catalan, Festa Major de Sants) is celebrated in the district of Sants (Barcelona) on Saint Bartholomew’s day (August 24th until September 1st). Its most distinctive element is the decoration of streets, concerts, popular dances, castelleras, giants, devils and fire dragons and other festive events are also held.
The festivities began in the nineteenth century, when you had the first notions of celebrating them. At that time, the neighborhood was known as Santa María de Sants and was an independent municipality of Barcelona that later, in 1897, would be annexed to the city as the Sants district.
It is known that in the middle of that century, popular dances were already celebrated in honor of San Bartolomé. At that time, there were already floral ornaments, but it was in 1943 when there was the first street decoration contest, an event that has become an emblem of these festivities, as well as in the neighborhood of Gracia.
You will find activities of all kinds, including the contest of the best decorated streets. Check this weeks agenda and we are going to party in this great neighbourhood! Although most of the streets of Sants will be a party full of stages, spaces for workshops and popular dinners, it is in the Parc de l’Espanya Industrial where the most massive concerts will be happening.
