As every year the city celebrates the famous Sant Joan day, where fireworks, music, dance and eating coca pastry are the main characters. The ideal plan is to go to one of the many bonfires that are prepared in the city. The purpose of this ritual was to give more strength to the sun, since from then on, the days are getting shorter until the arrival of the winter solstice.
In Barcelona, the night of June 23th to 24th is one of the most exciting moments of the year. At the beginning of the summer, there is already a feeling of excitement in the air. This is magnified ten times on this electric night when the streets are full of young and old enjoying this special vibe. In the true Spanish style, the celebrations are embraced sincerely, with exhibitions and parties that take place in every corner of the city.

We recommend you to keep in mind that the beaches are full of people, so it is better to be there early (around 9:00 p.m.). It is good to go prepared, with food, blankets for when the sun goes down, swimsuit, beer, music and of course a party mood!
What to eat during this day?
The official dish of Sant Joan is called ‘Coca’. Do you want to try it? It’s a bread-style cake, you can find it in all bakery windows throughout the city. There are several types available – both sweet and salty. Some contain crispy ingredients, fruits and nuts or cream. The ingredient that they all share in common is anise to give all cocas a distinctive flavor.
