The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc
Have you seen this magic event yet? The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc lights up at night in a magical spectacle of colors, water and music. It is a recommended show for all those who are visiting Barcelona and also for those who live there. An ideal show to go with children and the whole family or also with friends or for a romantic evening with your partner.
For the perfect plan we recommend going to see the dancing waters and then go to eat some delicious pinchos near Montjuic. You can find many great pincho restaurants in Calle Blai in the Poble Sec neighborhood.
The Magic fountain offers us a show that combines music, the movement of water and colored lights with more than 50 variations. There are several shows every night and each one lasts about 12 minutes, always with a different soundtrack.
Every year, the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc is the place chosen for the “Piromusical”, the final act of the Barcelona Festival, La Mercè. This show joins the Fountain with a great display of fireworks. You cannot miss this! It is also a privileged viewpoint to contemplate the city of Barcelona, with a view from the Plaza Espanya to the Tibidabo. A great place to take stunning photos as well.
How did this idea start?
The Magic Fountain was built for the Universal Exposition of 1929 by Carles Buïgas in the place where the Four Columns of Josep Puig i Cadafalch were, demolished in 1928 and rebuilt in 2010, a few meters away from its original location.
When the works for the great Universal Exposition of 1929 were already very advanced, the organizers considered that something special was missing that made it different. It was then that Carles Buïgas presented his project for a “colossal, daring and expensive work”, which would become the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc.
In less than a year over 3,000 workers turned this dream into reality and finished the magic fountain, filled with light, water and color so it had to be the main route of the exhibition.
