La Vila Olímpica, first maritime district of Barcelona!
Do you know all the different neighborhoods of Barcelona?
In this note we are going to tell you about the Olympic Village of Poblenou (formerly known simply as Vila or Olympic Village). Where is it located? It is a district of Sant Martí, belonging to traditional Poblenou that was the object of reform and enabled as a residence for athletes on the occasion of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.
Would you like to know why the neighborhood is called like that? Here we tell you a little more …The 1992 Olympics generated a great change in the traditional neighborhood of Poblenou that became an object of reforms to create residences for athletes. Before, this part of the coast was only consisting of deposits and docks. At present, it has become one of the most modern and architecturally pretentious districts. The Olympic Village was built in an old and degraded industrial area of Poblenou. The main objective of the project was to build a residential neighborhood for athletes who participated in the 1992 Olympic Games and, at the same time, recover the coastline of Barcelona and create leisure and vegetation spaces.
The change in this area of the city was linked to the creation of the city’s beaches, which led to one of the great milestones of the transformation of Barcelona: to open the city to the sea and bring it closer to the people of Barcelona! For the first time, there was a beach in Barcelona! The design of the set was made by a team of architects formed mainly by Oriol Bohigas, Josep Martorell, David Mackay and Albert Puigdomènech, who launched a large urban operation that led to the Port Olímpic and the park of the same name. The Nova Icària beach was built and a very spacious neighborhood started to develop.
Transportation: There is the “Ciutadella-Vila Olímpica” metro station so you can easily move by subway. There are also the terminal stations of the Trambesòs Ciutadella-Vila Olímpica and Wellington tram network. In the neighborhood there are nine Bicing stations, so you can find plenty of bicycles.
Although some old chimneys reminds us of the industrial past of the neighborhood, the landscape is now dominated by the Mapfre towers and the Hotel Arts. The initial project contemplated the construction of four skyscrapers, but according to the Coastal Law, only two could be built. In addition to the sports and leisure area of the Port Olímpic, one of the Pompeu Fabra University campuses is located in the renovated facilities of some old military barracks. The university library occupies the unique building of the Les Aigües deposit, which formerly fed the fountain of the neighboring Ciutadella park.
